Habitat Patch Size and Local Distribution of Burrowing Owls (athene Cunicularia) in Argentina

چکیده
– Habitat quality and landscape structure are key factors that determine the distributions of animals. The general characteristics of the habitat of Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia) have been well studied, but little is known about how landscape structure affects this species. Other studies have suggested that food resources for owls should be higher in small patches because of increased edge and proximity to dense vegetation, and predation risk should be lower in large patches. We examined the relationship between patch occupancy by owls and the size of habitat patches produced by grazing of colonial, burrowing rodents, plains vizcachas (Lagostomus maximus, Chinchillidae), in central Argentina. We investigated the hypothesis that patch size influences prey availability for owls by comparing arthropod abundance in habitat patches of different sizes. We also examined the relationship between habitat patch size and vegetation characteristics of the patch. Vizcacha colonies occupied by owls had significantly smaller grazed areas than unoccupied colonies. Abundance and biomass of arthropods were not different among patch sizes or ______________ Corresponding author.

Burrowing owls and burrowing mammals: are ecosystem engineers interchangeable as facilitators?
Terrestrial vertebrates exhibit dynamic, positive interactions that form and dissolve under different circumstances, usually with multiple species as participants. Ecosystem engineers are important facilitators of other species because they cause physical changes in the environment that alter resource availability. Although a species can be associated with more than one partner, facilitators ma...
متن کاملBreeding Dispersal and Nesting Behavior of Burrowing Owls Following Experimental Nest Predation
—Nest predation is considered a primary factor affecting the life-history characteristics and particularly dispersal of many avian species. We tested the hypothesis that nest predation would increase dispersal probability, dispersal distance and the frequency of renesting. We removed eggs from burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia) nests to simulate nest predation in southeastern California. Owls r...

متن کاملPopulation Trajectory of Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia) in Eastern Washington
Anecdotal evidence suggests that burrowing owls have declined in Washington. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is currently conducting a status review for burrowing owls which will help determine whether they should be listed as threatened or endangered in the state. To provide insights into the current status of burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) , we analyzed data from the North...
متن کاملVentilatory and metabolic responses of burrowing owls, Athene cunicularia, to moderate and extreme hypoxia: analysis of the hypoxic ventilatory threshold vs. hemoglobin oxygen affinity relationship in birds.
We measured ventilation, oxygen consumption and blood gases in burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) breathing moderate and extreme hypoxic gas mixtures to determine their hypoxic ventilatory threshold (HVT) and to assess if they, like other birds and mammals, exhibit a relationship between HVT and hemoglobin O2 affinity (P(50)) of their blood. An earlier report of an attenuated ventilatory respo...
